Houston’s Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America (NGPL) is testing the waters for an expansion to its Gulf Coast pipeline that would increase the flow from its Illinois connection point to its markets in the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast region.

The company on Wednesday announced a two week open season to get a feel for industry interest in such an expansion. NGPL currently has about 9,200 miles of pipeline in the United States which bring natural gas from the Permian Basin and Gulf of Mexico up to the Chicago area and West to New Mexico. NGPL’s expansion project would increase the flow capability of this pipeline by as much as 750,000 dekatherms per day.

As production and consumption of Natural Gas increases in the United States, the demand for improved transportation has also risen.
